Description
What it is
The flame sensor (flame rod) that proves the burner has actually lit. It sits in the flame and passes a small DC microamp current back to the control board; if the board does not see that current it closes the gas valve within seconds as a safety measure. The rod is not a wear part in the mechanical sense — it simply oxidises, and cleaning or replacing it is the first thing to try.
Symptoms it fixes
Furnace lights and then shuts off after 2-10 seconds, repeating the start sequence. Burners never light because the gas valve never opens. The control board locks out after three failed ignition attempts. On Trane and American Standard boards these show up as a specific flame-sensor or open-sensor fault code.
Specification
L-shaped rod with a 90 degree bend, about 5 in overall with a 3 in sensing element and roughly 1-1/8 in from the mounting flange to the bend. Ceramic insulator, stainless sensing rod, 1/4 in male quick-connect terminal. Check the bend direction against the sensor you are removing — it has to point into the burner flame.
Why a 7-pack
These are a service item on any furnace maintenance round, and they are small and light enough that shipping them one at a time costs more than the part. A seven-pack is a stock item for anyone servicing several furnaces, or a spare set for the units on one property.
Fits
Trane and American Standard gas furnaces, including the XR80, XR90, XB80 and XE80 families and their American Standard equivalents.
Replaces
SEN01114 — also cross-referenced as SEN00491, SEN1114, SEN0337, SEN0441, SEN00441, SEN00337, PSE-T19, PSE712, B340888-2, B340888P01, CARSEN491 and CARSEN1114.
Fitting
Shut off the gas supply and the electrical power. Remove the single mounting screw, withdraw the rod from the burner and disconnect the wire. Before fitting the new sensor, try cleaning the old rod with fine steel wool or emery cloth — if the furnace then runs normally, keep the new one as a spare. Otherwise fit the new rod, refit the screw and reconnect the terminal, then run a heat cycle and check for a steady flame with no short-cycling.
Before you order
Send us the model number from the furnace rating plate and we will confirm the fit before you buy. If it does not fit, we replace it.
